A little herstory...
The conception of Girls Rock Lawrence happened in 2014 with these 4 women. One night, outside the Replay Lounge, Monica and Angie (both local musicians) were discussing their desire to see more femmes in the local music scene. Sally had a few friends that started a Girls Rock Camp in Columbia, MO. Somewhat unsure what would come of this, the three decided to check-out the camp in Columbia that summer to see what it was all about. Inspired and motivated, they returned to Lawrence completely convinced that their community needed a camp like this! Kelly (also a musician) came to one of the very first volunteer meetings with every intention of helping make magic happen. She joined the organizing crew; this became the dream team that made the very first Girls Rock Lawrence camp in 2015 happen!
The GRL Board
We are a consensus-based board, which means we make decisions collectively and collaboratively. It is crucial that each of our voices is heard and intentions are understood before making important decisions about our camp and mission. We find that by utilizing a "horizontal" organizing structure our process is effective and non-competitive, our relationships are strong, and we are constantly learning to undermine oppressive, patriarchal decision-making and leadership structures. We are passionate about making our community of Lawrence a more inclusive and safe space for all those underrepresented by the patriachy, amplifying their voices, and inspiring future leaders.
